Breakthrough: electric motor entirely 3D-printed

tu-chemnitz-3d-druck-3d-print-elektromotor-electric-motorResearchers at the TU Chemnitz have 3D-printed an entire electric motor made of iron, copper and ceramic using the additive manufacturing process. They say it leads to better efficiency of the drives and enables more compact designs at the same time.

The team at the Chemnitz University of Technology have produced what they say is the the “world’s first electric motor using a multi-material 3D printing process.” This was done with the aid of metallic and ceramic pastes, which are formed in layers by an extrusion process and then sintered.

The researchers managed to 3D-print all relevant components of such an electric machine in one process. These include electrical conductors made of copper as well as the electrical insulation made of ceramic, which insulates the conductors against each other and against the magnetic circuit parts made of iron.

On top, the team managed to push the limit on the operating temperature up by replacing the conventional polymer-based insulation materials with ceramics with a much higher temperature resistance. The operating temperature of their electric drives is now only limited by the ferromagnetic properties of the iron, which remain intact at up to 700°C.
